Braided River opens people to the wonders of wilderness and wildness—and the possibility of creating a sustainable future. We connect people to the natural world—its modern condition and current needs—through photography, literature, and stories of adventure.
Braided River seeks to get people ready for change, especially of behavior and thinking in terms of conservation. We know that people change not through coercion, but by choice. We also know that strident advocacy messages—and messages designed to scare people—appeal to a small fraction of the already converted and draw a negative reaction from those who are not. Braided River taps deeper mythologies and shared values to elicit a more lasting change of perspective. We use visual storytelling—images of wild places and the photographers who are documenting them—to tap into a narrative about who we are and what we most desire as people.
Braided River produces books, museum exhibits, and multimedia presentations that depict the wildlife and wilderness of western North America. Highlighting positive solutions to the threats they face, we open people—beyond the traditional conservation community—to the hope of public action. We help shape the conversation about the importance of preserving wild places. More than just advocates for the environment, we guide people into western North America’s wild heart.
Braided Riveris an avid supporter of the photographers we work with, all of whom have devoted their lives to capturing—in images—their unique visions of the natural world.
