Arctic Wings: Birds of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Print E-mail

Whatever the results of development may be, it is certain that migrating birds will make those effects, small or large, visible all around the world. — David Allen Sibley, author of The Sibley Guide to Birds

We hope that Arctic Wings will reach a broad cross section of the millions of people who enjoy bird-watching. Bird-watchers have the potential to make a tremendous contribution to the effort to permanently protect this one small but essential region of coastal habitat in the Arctic Refuge that is essential to the survival of many birds we all enjoy. — Stephen Brown, Ph.D.

Edited by Stephen Brown, Ph.D.; photography by Subhankar Banerjee, Michio Hoshino, Steven Kazlowski, Arthur Morris, and Hugh Rose; essays by Jeff Fair, Denver Holt, Sarah James, Kenn Kaufman, Frank Keim, Fran Mauer, Debbie Miller, Wayne R. Petersen, Stan Senner, Cynthia D. Shogan, Robert Thompson, and Mark Wilson. Also includes a CD of bird songs by Martyn Stewart. (July 2006/192 pages)

Winner: 2007 National Outdoor Book Award, "Design & Artistic Merit" category

The ecosystems of the world are linked by birds, and nowhere is that more apparent than the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, where more than 190 species converge from six continents and all fifty states to nest and rear their young in the twenty-four-hour summer daylight.

Arctic Wings is a tribute to the birds that have journeyed to the refuge and back every year since time immemorial. In 200 color images from five award-winning nature photographers, we experience an intense drama of birth and renewal. Essays by noted biologists and conservationists detail the life histories of representative bird species from every major group. Arctic Wings reveals the vital importance of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to world bird populations—and explores the potentially dire consequences of allowing oil exploration within its boundaries.

Braided River has partnered with Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences on the Arctic Wings project. Based in Manoment, Massachusetts, Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences is one of the nation’s oldest independent environmental research organizations. Manomet strives to achieve a more sustainable future by convening stakeholders and developing science-based, enduring solutions that work in the real world and improve conditions for wildlife, habitats, and people.
