Guardians of Life captures years spent on sea ice, among sacred peaks, and swimming in coral reefs. The expansive project highlights the essential and often underrecognized role Indigenous peoples play in protecting biodiversity and cultural resilience around the globe. As climate and biodiversity crises intensify, this project calls on Indigenous communities that have mastered the art of living on Earth without destroying it. Guardians of Life seeks to recognize and promote a broader movement of supporting Indigenous leadership, sovereignty, and a thriving future for all.
Through photography and storytelling, Kiliii Yüyan will share behind the scenes from his years documenting Indigenous communities effectively protecting their lands, waters, and cultural traditions. Guardians of Life encapsulates the courage, knowledge, challenges, and stewardship that sustain life on Earth.
Based in Seattle on traditional Duwamish and Coast Salish lands, Kiliii Yüyan (Chinese and Nanai/Hézhè ancestry) works through a cross-cultural lens, exploring the relationship between humanity and the natural world. He is known for award-winning immersive storytelling, including his compelling National Geographic Live! event in January 2024. Guardians of Life builds on Kiliii’s previous work, marking a deep commitment to amplifying the traditional knowledge and practices that are central to conservation.
